Lemongrass Essential Oil
Practical Use for Lemongrass Essential Oil - Fever Reduction
Long appreciated in Southeast Asia, Lemongrass grew native to Malaysia, but has been a staple of households in India, Thailand, and China and beyond for centuries. There are many references in ancient literature to what may have been Lemongrass, especially in Hebrew documents. Archeologists have discovered the highly fragrant stems, still offering traces of their original pungent lemony therapy centuries after being placed near the entombed bodies of several Pharaohs.
A close cousin of the popular Citronella, Lemongrass is an excellent insect repellent. Lemongrass not only repels but also kills many insect species, all while smelling pleasant to humans (definitely a plus over the conventional stinky bug sprays that are commercially available!)
Possible benefits of Lemongrass Essential Oil
Mental Well Being: Lemongrass is used in both Indonesia and Malaysia by herbalists to help eliminate bouts of moodiness, nervousness and anxiety, and promote relaxation. Rub on the temples and bottom of the feet, or diffuse Lemongrass Essential Oil in your home to help drive the blues away.
Soothing Muscles: In both ancient and modern Chinese medicine, Lemongrass Essential Oil has been used as a rub on sore muscles or the temples for headaches. Blending Lemongrass with a carrier oil makes a superb massage oil that can be a wonderful tool in times of illness to soothe and support the body. And it is known to stimulate blood flow.
Deodorant and Astringent: A few drops of Lemongrass can be used to help keep acne at bay. Add it to witch hazel or plain water to rinse the face. The same mixture may be sprayed or applied to places where offensive odors often occur. The sweet smell of Lemongrass is a nice alternative, especially on warm days.
Caution: Lemongrass Essential Oil can cause some skin irritation, so keep watch for signs of sensitivity. Either increase carrier oil amount or decrease the Lemongrass in the ratio. Ratio for dilution is 4 drops to every ounce (approx. 6 teaspoons) of carrier oil for a 0.7% dilution. If the skin is too sensitive even with dilution, Lemongrass Essential Oil may be diffused in the room.
Pregnancy/Nursing: While generally considered safe to use during pregnancy and lactation, we suggest that you should check with your practitioner prior to using any essential oil.
